State of Grace
(1990)
Director: Phil Joanou
Starring: Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright, John Turturro
our comment. "...must be an outtake from one of Tarantino's wet dreams."
Having been away for several years, Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) is reunited with his gangland friends, the ruthless Jackie Flannery (Gary Oldman) and his brother Frankie (Ed Harris), Hell's Kitchen's most powerfull racketeer. Streetwise Terry grew up in this neighbourhood, but returning as an undercover cop assigned to put Frankie Flannery out of business forever will prove to be a task more haunting and dangerous than he imagined.

When it comes to gangster movies, they don't come much better than this. It's smart, fast-paced, and more purely entertaining than a dozen John Woo films... It's also one of my favourites.

An under-rated classic!

Story: 8/10 - Classic gangster stuff (refreshing seeing the Irish mafia for once)

Acting: 10/10 - Penn and Oldman are great, but Ed Harris is once again the ultimate scene stealer.

Violence: 10/10 - This movie was denied cinema release in many countries because of it's ultra-violent ending, wich must be an outtake from one of Tarantino's wet dreams.

Nudity: 0/10 - Nope!

Coolness: 7/10 - Crime, hard drinking and brawling... and lotsa guns.
