Gremlins
(1984)
Director: Joe Dante
Starring: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Dick Miller
our comment. "This unexpected hit movie spawned many imitations and a crappy sequel."
This PG-13 horror fantasy takes place at christmastime in a perfect looking old-fashioned American small town. Inventor Hoyt Axton buys a mysterious furry pet from Asian antique-shop owner Keye Luke for his son. When Luke's strict warnings are ignored, the cuddly creatures spawns rude reptilian demons who trash the town and mock everything sacred to the locals.

This Spielberg produced comedy/horror flick was supposed to be a lot more violent( the gremlins ate the dog, and the mother was decapitaded), but Joe Dante changed his mind and made a more family oriented film. It still works really well, Gremlins is fast-paced, funny and scary and the characters are enjoyable. Great fun!

Your e-mail:
Story: 8/10 - Classis drive-in stuff full of in-jokes and irreverent comedy.

Acting: 6/10 - The star in this film is a small furry animal and he's great. The humans do an o.k job too.

Violence: 4/10 - It would be banned in Gremlin city. A gremlin bursts wide open in a micro wave, and another melt in the movies grand finale.

Coolness: 7/10 - This unexpected hit movie spawned many imitations and a crappy sequel. Joe Dante's first film was a Jaws parody, the unbelievingly cool Piranha.

Soundz: 7/10 - Jerry Goldsmith's cirkus like score is memorable.

F/X: 8/10 - Chris Wallas made the effects and later went on to be a director, and since then nobody has ever heard from him. Such a shame!
