Near Dark
(1987)
Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jeanette Goldstein
our comment. "They seem to forget to remove the wrapping before they eat their food."
Hick-boy Caleb picks up mysterious and sensual Mae one night he is out doing whatever the hell hick-boys do. It seems her hickeys go a bit deeper than he thought, and by dawn he's been initiated into a family of rural biker-looking bloodsuckers. These vampires (a word that's never used throughout the film) travel in stolen cars with blacked-out windows and stay in motels.

Poor Caleb now has 24 hours to make his first kill (in the meantime he sucks his dinner from the wrist of lovely Mae), or he'll have worse problems to deal with than his hunger.

This is one of the best horror movies of the 80's, original, stylish and brilliantly conceived. Check it out, and then check it out again!

Story: 9/10 - The first vampire/road movie is a unique classic, it blows away crap like "The Lost boys" and "Interview with the vampire". This is Dracula meets Wild at heart.

Acting: 8/10 - The James Cameron trio (Henriksen, Paxton and Goldstein) is excellent in this film, for the others it's just another day at work.

Violence: 8/10 - There's a dynamite sequence in a redneck bar, where our usual pack of savage killers feed on the customers while taking point-blank shotgun blasts to the gut.

Nudity: 0/10 - They seem to forget to remove the wrapping before they eat their food. Too bad.

Coolness: 9/10 - Very gutsy and cool, but the ending is unfortunately over-sentimental and lame.

Skid-marks: 7/10 - A car-chase featuring a winnebago, Yes please!
