Maniac Cop
(1987)
Director: William Lustig
Starring: Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree
our comment. "These people are the finest that B-movie Hollywood has to offer..."
New York city is terrorized by a series of brutal mutilation murders. The public is outraged, because it's discovered that the killer is a cop! Innocent policemen are killed by the panic-stricken public. The city is in an upproar. An investigator suspects that the killings are done by one Matt Cordell, a former cop who was framed and sent to prison where he supposedly was killed. But he wasn't (big surprise, given the title and all), and when an innocent NYC cop is blamed for the murders, he and his main squeeze escape and take on this almost supernatural killer.

92 minutes of fast-paced stupidity, definitely worth a look.

Story: 4/10 - It seems that you can't just make a movie about a guy whackin people, too bad because the plot in this little exploiter is very stupid and unbelievable. But if you're like me and can see through those minor details, you'll find it has a lot going for it and enjoy it a great deal.

Acting: 6/10 - These people are the finest that B-movie Hollywood has to offer, you have Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead trilogy), Tom Atkins (Night of the creeps) and Richard Roundtree (Mr. John Shaft himself).

Violence: 5/10 - William Lustig used up all the gore in the world for his first feature "Maniac", so there wasn't any left for this one. The body count is fairly high, but the violence is almost never graphic.

Nudity: 1/10 - William Lustig started out his career making X-rated films like "The violation of Claudia", and it was all downhill from there.

Coolness: 8/10 - The title is everything, and it has tons of cool things stashed away neatly underneath the action and suspense. Wunderkind Sam Raimi has a cameo.
