The Stuff
(1985)
Director: Larry Cohen
Starring: Michael Moriarty, Paul Sorvino, Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris
our comment. "High camp balances gore..."
The newest taste sensation is The Stuff (a marshmallowlike substance) and it's outselling ice cream two-to-one and merchants can't keep up with the voracious demand. In order to save their failing businesses, an ice cream industry saboteur (?!) and a junk food mogul attempt to uncover the manufacturing secrets of The Stuff. They soon discover the horrifying truth about The Stuff - that it is a living and all-consuming parasite that turns it's hosts into walking zombies!

Threatened on all sides and trusting no one, they suddenly find themselves in the middle of a last-ditch effort to ward off this invasion of the brand-name body snatcher and to save the country from the grip of this insidious and monstrous dessert!

Those who value logic and coherence in storytelling will probably find this a bit bizarre, but if not; you're in for 93 minutes of wacky filmmaking. The tagline reads; "Are you eating it or is it eating you?", hilarious.

Story: 8/10 - A product turns people into consumer zombies and eventually eats them from the inside. A strange combination of "The Blob" and "Invasion of the body snatchers". A very amusing social satire from producer/ director/ writer Larry Cohen.

Acting: 6/10 - Not exactly cream of the crop, but they all seem to be delighted to be in this bizarre film.

Violence: 6/10 - High camp balances gore with plenty of good humour.

Nudity: 0/10 - I said it was fun, I didn't say it was perfect!

Coolness: 8/10 - It's smooth and creamy! It's delicious!... and it KILLS! It is by definition cool as hell!
