Manhunter
(1986)
Director: Michael Mann
Starring: William Peterson, Joan Allen, Brian Cox, Dennis Farina, Kim Greist
our comment. "The dialogue between Lekter and Graham is excellent."
The film tells the spellbinding tale of a serial killer, with a perverse penchant for voyeurism slaughtering entire families in the Southeast. The FBI, at a loss with little forensic evidence and reason for motive, enlist a retired agent, Will Graham whose speciality is entering the mindset of maniacs, assimilating their fantasies and dreams, and predicting their next move. The same Graham was the man who captured the diabolical Dr. Hannibal Lekter a few years earlier, nearly loosing his mind in the process. It seems that Lekter holds the key to solving the case, and Will Graham must once again face his own ghosts as well as developing a few new once.

Silence of the lambs is probably an altogether better film, but I find Manhunter more colorful, imaginative and emotionally complex. I also think that whereas blind luck seemed to be Clarice Starling's greatest asset, Will Graham really gets to solve the case with pure perception and genious.

Story: 6/10 - Don't examine this story too carefully or the holes start to show through, but it's visually superior to it's "sequel" Silence of the lambs.

Acting: 8/10 - Brian Cox is very creepy as Hannibal Lekter, in many ways his portrayal is better than that of Anthony Hopkins. The dialogue between Lekter and Graham is excellent.

Violence: 6/10 - Steeped in an emotional as well as physical violence, but it still skims over the most disturbing parts of the excellent novel "The red dragon".

Nudity: 1/10 - There's more nudity in an average Miami Vice episode.

Coolness: 7/10 - Not excactly material that normal people would call cool, but then again whose normal.
