Nurse Betty
(2000)
Director: Neil Labute
Starring: Renée Zellweger, Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock, Greg Kinnear
our comment. "...you can rest assured it all ends well."
Betty is a waitress at the local diner in a small Kansas town. She dreams everyday of her true love; he appears as a doctor on her favourite soap opera five days a week. When her husband is killed in a drug deal gone wrong, Betty flees reality and drives cross-country to Los Angeles in the hopes of meeting her soap opera fantasy face to face. Followed by the drug dealers who killed her husband, Betty arrives in the city of Angels and eventually meets her dream doctor. So the plot thickens and poor Betty is caught in the middle, but for those of you too scared to see it, you can rest assured it all ends well (who would have thought that!).

Compared to piss like ”Pretty woman” and ”Sleepless in Seattle” this is a masterpiece, but it could have been so much better if they didn’t try to please everyone with it. It just makes it a mediocre comedy that will soon be forgotten.

Story: 4/10 - A black comedy from the director of ”In the company of men”, very mainstream and really not that funny. Betty’s husband was great, now there was a story waiting to unfold. This on the other hand is just a simple love story.

Acting: 6/10 - They all deliver honest days work, and Chris Rock is not as annoying as usual.

Violence: 4/10 - Betty’s husband gets scalped by Chris Rock, auch!

Nudity: 0/10 - Unfortunately today’s female actors aren’t lacking enough moral fiber.

Coolness: 3/10 - Never really grim or dark enough, but then again American comedies hardly ever are. Better luck next time, Neil.
