The Contender
(2000)
Director: Rod Lurie
Starring: Gary Oldman, Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges, Christian Slater, William Petersen
our comment. "...a little too righteous and good at heart."
The vice president is dead, and as the President makes his choice for a replacement, a secret contest of wills is being waged by a formidable rival. When Senator Laine Hanson is nominated as the first woman in history to hold the office, hidden agendas explode into a battle for power.

An average political thriller about principals, honor and other boring human aspects.

Story: 6/10 - Following in the footsteps of "The Manchurian candidate" and "All the President’s men", but it still has a long way to go, it’s fascinating but a little too righteous and good at heart.

Acting: 9/10 - Oldman, Allen and Bridges all deliver outstanding performances.

Violence: 1/10 - The tagline for it is "Sometimes you can assassinate a leader without firing a shot", so that kind of sets the standards, now doesn’t it.

Nudity: 2/10 - A gang-bang at a frat-initiation party is the only explicit stuff in this "controversial" thriller.

Coolness: 0/10 - No, coolness does not apply here!
