Planet of the Apes
(2001)
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Estella Warren
our comment. "Tim Burton is a master storyteller [...] and Rick Baker is still the man!"
Pilot Leo Davidson crash lands on a strange planet, finding himself in a brutal, primal place where monkeys.....eh, sorry! Apes are in charge and humans are hunted and enslaved by the tyrannical primates. After being captured, Leo gets help from Ari, a passionate and independent-minded chimp who believes in co-existence of all species. Together they lead a rebellious struggle against the Evil Thade, leader of the military and all-round bad guy (oh! and by the way he hates humans).

Blending adventure, action and humour and blessed with a dependable ensemble of players, Planet of the Apes is just the ordeal it should be. Highly entertaining!

Story: 9/10 - Based on Pierre Boulle's classic novel, this is more than just a remake. Tim Burton is a master storyteller.

Acting: 9/10 - Almost flawless, seems as if everybody is thrilled to be working for Tim Burton. And so they should be.

Violence: 1/10 - Bring the kids along!

Nudity: 0/10 - Tim Burton supposedly wanted a love scene between human Leo and chimp Ari, but the studio put their foot down, thank christ!

Coolness: 10/10 - Has all the elements of a landmark classic, the ending is expected but overly cool!

F/X: 10/10 - From "The incredible melting man" to "Planet of the Apes", and Rick Baker is still the man!
